Thomas A. Crowell, Esq. is an attorney and founding partner of Saperstein & Crowell, LLP.
Mr. Crowell counsels clients on a wide range of entertainment law and intellectual property rights issues; he and his firm have recently represented clients in deals with The Learning Channel, Elsevier Publishing, Starz, Discovery Communications, Focal Press, the Smithsonian Network, WE: The Women’s Entertainment Network, The Science Technology Network, IDW Publishing, and Sony Entertainment.
In addition to his private practice, Mr. Crowell is the Director of the Indie Film Clinic at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he also teaches a course in film law. Mr. Crowell also lectures nationally, teaching producers and lawyers how to avoid common legal pitfalls in the film and television industry. He has taught film law courses at several New York institutions, including the School of Visual Arts, New York Comic Con, NY Anime Festival, Film/Video Arts, the Graphic Artists Guild, the New York County Lawyers Association, and the Producers Guild of America; he is a featured lecturer for the National Academy of Continuing Legal Education.
A frequent columnist for film industry publications, Mr. Crowell is also the author of the best-selling legal guide for independent producers, The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers (Elsevier 2011), now in its second edition. The book has been adopted as a core textbook in film schools across the United States.
An advocate and supporter of legal pro bono work for artists, Mr. Crowell is the founding Executive Director of the New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. In helping to create an organization that spoke clearly to artists and filmmakers, Mr. Crowell drew from his pre-law career in television: prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Crowell was a television producer and the head of business development for one of Japan’s premier television production companies. As a producer, Mr. Crowell created the popular children’s video series “Professor Potto’s Videolabs™,” which was awarded a National Parenting Center Seal of Approval.
Mr. Crowell graduated from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, cum laude, Order of The Coif, and is admitted to the practice of law in New York, New Jersey, and the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court.
