This CLE will help introduce lawyers to the business and legal landscape of the comic book industry with an emphasis on practical skills.

Some of the issues explored in this CLE:

  • An overview of comic book creation, publishing, distribution, and popular “D.I.Y.” alternatives
  • Critical IP issues in representing the comic book creator
  • How to help your client get her comic book into the hands of the right publisher

      THE COMIC BOOK CREATOR AS CLIENT: An Overview of Representing the Comic Book Creator and Comic Book PropertiesIntellectual Property Attorneys. Arts and Entertainment Attorneys. General Counsel. Anyone who is interested in the world of comic book properties.

      Before you apply, please know:

    • The course will take place at NYCC on October 8, 2015 at 12:15 PM - 1:30 PM
    • The cost of the course is $100. This includes Thursday admission. Once approved, attorneys will have the option to upgrade to a 4 Day Professional Badge for an additional fee.
    • This course has been approved for all attorneys, including those who are newly admitted (less than twenty-four months).
    • This program is open only to registered attorneys and the tickets are non-transferable. By applying for registration to this CLE course you are representing and warranting that you are a registered attorney in good standing at least one U.S. Jurisdiction. By applying for registration, you agree that the New York State Bar association and/or New York Comic Con may verify your attorney registration status.
    • Completing the application does not register you for the CLE course or a professional badge for NYCC 2015. If your application is approved, you will be prompted by email to complete your registration. Please allow 14 days for a response.
    • Submitting the application and being approved does not guarantee you a chance to complete registration as only a limited number of seats are available. Perhaps you’ve written a SteamPunk novel or comic book and are now ready to meet with publishers, or maybe you’ve taken photographs of conventioneers in cosplay and want to make merchandise from your pictures. How do you protect your creative work? What are the limits of such legal protection? What kind of permissions do you need? What kind of rights should you keep? In this presentation, we will explore legal topics critical to creators such as the protection of ideas; copyrights and “copy wrongs”; work for hire agreements and model releases; and a multitude of unseen legal traps waiting to ensnare the unsuspecting artist.
